It may be difficult to choose a cat breeder when you want to buy a cat or a kitten of a rare breed. The Australian Mist is a very rare cat breed, as it was registered in 1980. Australian Mist cats are the only cats originated from Australia. Shorthair domestic cats have been common in Australia since the late 19th century. In the 1970s, these cats were crossbred with the Burmese cat to obtain brown, blue, lilac and chocolate coat colors and with the Abyssinian cat to obtain agouti (ticking) gene.

Every cat breeder knows that adding the genes of the local domestic animals adds to the health and hardiness of the new breed. Adding Australian domestic shorthair cats to the cross of the Burmese and Abyssinian cats prevents hereditary disorders because of the variable gene pool of non-purebreds.

The first name of the new breed was Spotted Mist. In 1998, the name was changed to the Australian Mist, because the marbled pattern was accepted by the breed standard. This breed is one of the few with a detailed breeding history. Every cat breeder that created and improved the Australian Mist kept accurate records of all litters. The foundation stock of this breed is well-known and when purchasing a purebred kitten, it’s possible to trace its ancestry back to the foundation (or even pre-foundation) cats.

All purebred cats are expensive, but cats of a rare breed are even more expensive. Breed fanciers who are not going to breed and show their cats, but are interested in the exotic appearance and friendly personality of the Australian Mist can buy a pet quality kitten at a great discount. All pet quality animals are spayed or neutered to prevent spoiling the breed by defective genes. Some irresponsible and unethical breeders use pet quality animals for breeding. It results in producing purebred kittens with faults or poor health. Breeding poor quality animals in the beginning of the breed can lead to creating defective bloodlines, which will spoil the breed’s image in public. Those who care for the future of the Australian Mist will buy a kitten of this breed only from a responsible and devoted cat breeder.
